The first prints by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists were produced in the late 1960's and by the 1970s there was a sustained interest in what was perceived to be a new technique. However, the processes of printmaking are akin to the traditional practice of wood engraving and mark making that is part of the lived environment of Indigenous peoples.
Master printmakers such as Theo Trembley, Martin King and Basil Hall were instrumental in establishing remote area workshops and from these initiatives evolved an ongoing and sustainable market for these diverse and culturally dynamic prints.
Aboriginal prints and printmaking are comparatively new in the Australian art market. Urban artists such as Judy Watson, Brook Andrews to name just two have used the medium to express political and socially topical issues while the traditional Raark or cross hatching of Arnhem land art translates well to etching and engravings on paper.
Original prints also offer an affordable and accessible entrée to a novice collector. While there is a perception that prints are not as desirable as paintings, the astute collector will seek to include editioned prints in their portfolio.
