The Tiwi
people live on
Bathurst and
Melville
Islands,
approximately 20 minutes flight from
Darwin off
the north coast of
Australia.
Melville Island is the second largest Australian island and is separated from
Bathurst Island by the narrow Apsley Straits. Tiwi
culture has a distinct aesthetic were all aspects of the artforms - singing,
performance, body decoration, sculptural carvings and painting are brought
together, linking the ancestral stories directly to the contemporary artist.
The works represented
here are from Munupi Arts & Crafts Association located at Pirlangimpi (Garden Point) on
Melville Island's north western coastline. Using a range
of medium in their paintings, including pigments, acrylic and gouache, theirs
is a distinctive style that embraces contemporary life while remaining grounded
in their spiritual and cultural environment.
