Rachel Malthouse

Rachel has worked with the Indigenous glass studio, Glass Mob as a technician while learning the art of manipulating lump crystal. It is only recently that Rachel began to create unique glassworks by working directly with hot crystal that is poured molten from the furnace. The process itself is thousands of years old, dating back to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, but is now being used as a medium by Indigenous artists in sculptural format.

The forms she has created are interpretations of traditional artefacts from the Atherton Tablelands in far north Queensland. The designs are taken from traditional clan motifs that were applied to shields and personal artifacts offering protection to their owners. Rachel's Mother, Jennifer Herd has mentored countless young indigenous artists to attain success in the art industry and has been an important mentor to Rachel. It is through Jennifer that Rachel received permission to use these clan designs to work with in glass and to exhibit in her own right.
