Arnhemland

Arnhem Land has three distinct areas: Western Arnhem Land, Central Arnhem Land and Eastern Arnhem Land. Oenpelli in the West is known for the Kunwinjku artists whose earlier, traditional painting style was simple and immediate. Contemporary paintings from Injalak are often more stylized, the cross-hatching fine and meticulous and they are known for their pandanas fibre work. Maningrida and Ramingining are just two communities in Central Arnhem Land where some of the most prominent artists have emerged from including Johnny Bulunbulun, Jack Wunuwun and Philip Gudthaykudthay. In the east is Yirrkalla. The geographical area is known as the Miwatj region. Miwatj means 'morning side' and refers to the fact that it is the most eastern part of the Top End. The artists work in a wide range of styles including painting on bark and poles using natural pigments, print making, carving and fibre work. Established artists in Yirrkalla include; Banduk Marika and Gawirrin Gumana.

Several well established art centres service the region including Djilpin Arts near Katherine and Injalak Arts and Crafts Association, located in Gunbalanya (Oenpelli). Both art centres are in Western Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. The aims of the art centres are to promote and preserve the indigenous art and culture of Western Arnhem Land. Any income stays within the communities and assists in their development.
